Benesse Reports Results for FY2006 Third Quarter Financial Results
Release Date : 2007/02/07
Benesse Corporation Group posted year-on-year growth in both sales and earnings centered on strong performances by its core Education Group and the Language Company.
Compared to the same period a year earlier, consolidated third-quarter net sales increased 6.7%, or 16,636 million yen, to 263,946 million yen. This reflected a number of factors, including higher sales in Shinkenzemi, the mainstay product in the Education Group, an increase in sales at US subsidiary Berlitz International, Inc. in the Language Company thanks to an increase in the number of lessons taken, particularly in Europe and Asia, and stronger sales at its ELS Language Centers, and a steady increase in residents in nursing homes operated by subsidiary Benesse Style Care Co., Ltd. in the Senior Company accompanying expansion in the network. These performances more than compensated for a drop in sales in the AVIVA Business where the implementation of management reforms from the previous fiscal year has reduced the number of schools by one third.
On a consolidated basis, profits also rose compared to the previous third quarter on the back of higher sales in the Education Group, Language Company and Senior Company. Operating income rose 15.9%, or 4,745 million yen, to 34,580 million yen, ordinary income increased 14.7%, or 4,537 million yen, to 35,416 million yen, and net income rose 10.6%, or 1,870 million yen, to 19,523 million yen.
