Benesse Reports Results for First Half of Fiscal 2006
Release Date : 2006/11/08
Benesse Corporation announced today its financial results for first half of fiscal 2006.
Interim consolidated net sales increased 7.1% from a year earlier, to 175,185 million yen. Ordinary income rose 15.7%, to 26,490 million yen and net income increased 20.7%, to 14,676 million yen. These figures represent Benesse's third consecutive interim period of higher sales and fourth consecutive interim period of increased earnings.
A number of factors were behind the increase in consolidated net sales, including a year-on-year rise in cumulative enrollment in the Education Group's mainstay Shinkenzemi courses, growth in the number of lessons taken and a strong performance by ELS Language Centers at U.S. subsidiary Berlitz International, and a year-on-year increase in residents at nursing homes operated by subsidiary Benesse Style Care Co., Ltd.
Benesse reported an increase in ordinary income on the back of sales-led earnings growth in the Education Group and at Berlitz International. This factor, as well as the absence of a loss on business restructuring related to the closure or integration of AVIVA PC schools in the previous interim period, underpinned the increase in net income.
