Benesse Holdings, Inc.

Release Date : 2005/05/10

Benesse Corporation announced today its financial results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2005 (FY 2004).
The company’s operating income rose 26.5% to 26,177 million yen on consolidated net sales of 291,403 million yen, up 12.0% year on year. This was the second consecutive year of top- and bottom-line growth. And the company achieved and exceeded the target of the Medium-Term Management Plan two years ahead of schedule.
The increase in net sales was attributable to a number of factors. In the Education Group, cumulative enrollment in Shinkenzemi correspondence courses grew year on year, centered on Elementary, Junior High School and Senior High School courses. Furthermore, Shinken-AD Co., Ltd., which became a consolidated subsidiary in the second half of the previous year, made its first full-year contribution to sales in the Education Group. The Senior Company also reported higher sales thanks to expansion in the nursing home network and a steady increase in the number of residents.

Looking at operating income, although earnings dropped at Berlitz International,Inc. primarily due to underperformed results in Japan, total operating income grew thanks to higher earnings in the Education Group and the Senior Company on increased sales, as well as to the withdrawal from unprofitable businesses and other factors in the Women & Family Company.

Ordinary income rose 26.8% to 27,471 million yen, and net income increased 52.2% to 14,279 million yen.
