Benesse Revises Interim Earnings Forecasts for Fiscal 2004

In light of recent business performance, Benesse Corporation has revised its interim earnings forecasts for fiscal 2004, ending March 31, 2005, announced on May 12, 2004 together with results for fiscal 2003. Details are as follows.
1.Revised Consolidated Results for the First Half of FY2004
Sales : 140,900 million yen
Ordinary Income : 22,800 million yen
Net Income :12,900 million yen
Sales : 138,400 million yen
Ordinary Income : 18,000 million yen
Net Income :9,800 million yen
Sales : 2,500 million yen (1.8%)
Ordinary Income : 4,800 million yen (26.7%)
Net Income : 3,100 million yen (31.6%)
2. Revised Non-consolidated Results for the First Half of FY2004
Sales : 94,600 million yen
Ordinary Income : 21,700 million yen
Net Income : 12,800 million yen
Sales : 92,200 million yen
Ordinary Income :17,500 million yen
Net Income : 10,000 million yen
Sales :2,400 million yen (2.6%)
Ordinary Income : 4,200 million yen (24.0%)
Net Income : 2,800 million yen (28.0%)
3. Reasons for Revision
Benesse expects interim ordinary income and net income to exceed initial forecasts due to factors such as rising sales in its core Shinkenzemi correspondence course business on the back of higher-than-expected enrollment, the deferment of some planned marketing expenses and research and development costs to the second half of the year, and the timing for booking costs related to the implementation of a company-wide marketing strategy.
4. Full-Year Earnings Forecasts for Fiscal 2004
Benesse is currently compiling its full-year earnings forecasts for fiscal 2004, ending March 31, 2005. The company plans to announce these forecasts together with its interim results on November 10, 2004.
