Benesse Reports FY2001 First-Half Financial Results
Release Date : 2001/11/16
Benesse Corporation today announced consolidated financial results for the first half of its fiscal year ending March 31, 2002 (FY2001). The net sales climbed to 134,367 million yen, an increase of 2.2% from a year earlier, but operating income declined 9.7%, to 17,812 million yen. The sales gain was attributable to increased revenues from English lessons offered by Berlitz International Inc., its wholly owned subsidiary, as well as expanded operations at the Senior Company, its nursing care business segment. Those increases offset a decline in sales at the Children & Students (C&S) Company, Benesse's educational services segment, which reflects a drop in enrollment for its Shinkenzemi home study correspondence courses.
The sagging sales and resulting profit decline at the C&S Company were largely responsible for the decline in operating income for the first half of fiscal 2001. In addition, ordinary income fell 10.1% from the year-earlier period, to 19,110 million yen, while net income slid 12.8%, to 10,357 million yen. Net income per share plunged to 97.39 yen, down 14.27 yen from a year earlier.
On a non-consolidated basis, net sales totaled 93,111 million yen, down 5.9% from a year earlier. Operating income fell 12.0% to 16,732 million yen, while ordinary income came to 18,590 yen, an 11.5% drop, and net income totaled 10,818 million yen, down 11.1%.
