Notice Concerning the Impact of the Earthquake and Tsunami Along the Pacific Coast of the Tohoku Region

We offer our deepest sympathies to all those affected by the earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011, and our thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones in this disaster.
The status of major damage to the Benesse Holdings Group as best determined at present is as follows:
1. Damage
At present Benesse has suffered no known harm to personnel or major damage to property as a result of the earthquake and tsunami. Although the Group is still trying to determine the safety of some of its staff in the afflicted region. A nursing home that the Group’s subsidiary Benesse Style Care Co., Ltd. operates in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture suffered some structural damage, but none of the residents were hurt. Some delays may arise in the delivery of products and services from subsidiary Benesse Corporation to customers residing in the afflicted Prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, Akita, Miyagi, Yamgata, Fukushima and Ibaraki.
2. Effect on Earnings Performance
The effect of this cataclysm on the Group’s earnings performance is presently under scrutiny. We will promptly disclose any material impact that we forecast for the Groups earnings performance going forward.
3. Assistance to the Afflicted Region
Together with Benesse Corporation, Benesse Holdings has decided to provide ¥50 million in relief money to assist the victims and help restore the afflicted regions. This money will be disbursed once the afflicted regions have been prepared to accept relief. The group will also consider providing material assistance as it continues to monitor the local situation.
We pray for the earliest possible restoration of the afflicted regions.
